I am in the process of reading a book called, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. So for obvious reasons, it's gotten me thinking about death, my own in particular, and funerals. I have so many questions about funerals! For instance: is a funeral a requirement? By law? What's legal and what's not when it comes to death? I've been doing a little research, and have found that a funeral can cost around $10,000! FUCK! I am way too thrifty for that shit! In all seriousness, if possible, I want my body to be donated to science. I'm pretty sure that's close to free. If that's not possible, I at least want to be cremated, because that cuts costs. I read that a casket is not required by law when cremation takes place, and also, embalming is not required if there is no viewing before-hand. As far as the funeral itself, I believe that takes place more for the living than the dead, so I don't think I'd want one. At least, not in the traditional sense. Anyway, I apologize if this seems morbid, but I've thought about this a lot over many years. It should probably spur me into getting a will drawn up or something.

I think funerals are usually a large affair, kind of like a religious service but not really. It costs a lot of money. I'm fairly confident that funerals are not legally required, but it is a good way to gain closure for your friends and family. I think what you are looking for is a memorial services, these don't have bodies. Memorial Services are a lot simpler and cheaper.
There are a lot of odd rules when it comes to human remains and how you can dispose of them. For example, all those shows where ashes are thrown into the sea, usually illegal.
