bad friday

Yesterday was the worst day of work in a long time. After having the day off on Thursday, I returned to work to find that several of my co-workers got laid off, including someone I was pretty close to. It's just scary when something like this happens. It really makes you think, "what if that was me?" What would I do? Sadly, the slow real estate market plays a big part in the reason our company is so slow, and people are losing jobs because of it. So yesterday for the beginning of my day, I was sort of numb with shock. Trying not to go in the bathroom and cry. And I thought things couldn't get worse. Right. At 1:30, I went to take my first pumping break. Got in the room, got everything set up, got comfy, got my magazine ready, flipped the switch on the pump, and... NOTHING. My pump died! I didn't know what to do. After flipping the switch a few more times, unplugging and replugging cords, hitting and shaking the pump, I had to give up on it. The only thing I could think to do was call the hospital to see if I could rent one. I tried and had to leave a voice mail. Nobody got back to me. So I talked to my supervisor (luckily, the only female supervisor was the only one there) and I left work to feed Ivy. Got home about 3, fed her, emailed some people on Craig's List to buy a used pump, called the hospital back, then headed back to work. The hospital rents them for $50 a month, but that's almost pointless if I'm still going to breastfeed for another year. Plus our insurance doesn't cover the rental. It's $250 to buy a new one, but I'm hoping it won't come to that. So anyway, back to work for a few hours, then I had to leave by 6 to come home and get Ivy fed again. Ugh. What a night. You can't imagine how much I depend on that thing. It's as bad as if my car died. I can't live without it! So I got an email this morning and I might have found a pump to buy in Cold Spring for $50. Not too bad. I'm just so mad I didn't buy another pump at a garage sale. I must have seen at least 4 of the same one this summer at garage sales. That's where I got my other one, and it lasted a solid 10 months. I guess I shouldn't have expected it to last forever. Oh well.
