Wild Things

Jer and I got to the theater last night to see Where the Wild Things Are. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I liked it a lot, but I don't think I would go as far as "loved it." I wouldn't see it in the theater again. I probably wouldn't even buy it. But I would probably rent it to watch again. It was a lot different from what I expected. It was deep and emotional, instead of light-hearted and fun. I did not expect to see relationship problems between the Wild Things. That really threw me. So I'll just break it down into "like" and "dislike" lists.

Likes
-I loved Max. The little boy that plays him is so extremely perfect for the role, and absolutely adorable. And I bet he had a blast making this movie.
-I liked that, even though the original book didn't provide a lot of source material for a movie, the movie they made from it still felt true to the book. And a lot of what was in the book can be found in the movie. Max chasing his dog (I loved the opening scene, by the way), the Wild Rumpus, and even the supper waiting for him at the end (and it was still hot.)
-There was this one scene in the movie that was shot like the cover of the book. The Beast character is sitting at the mouth of the fort in the same sleeping position. Very cool.
-I loved the cinematography. Everything about the movie visually was perfect and beautiful. The scenery, the color scheme, the nature, and even the Wild Things were believable within their backdrop.
-The soundtrack/score was AWESOME. I loved it.
-Giant Dog

Dislikes
-The first problem I had with the movie was the voices of the monsters. I don't know, I guess I expected them to have deeper voices, or something that matched the way they looked. It was weird. They just sounded like people. Didn't like it.
-My big beef with the movie was that they changed the names of all the monsters. True, they weren't actually given names in the book, but they do have names. And the names they used in the movie were as fitting as the voices. Carol? KW? Douglas? Judith? WTF??? What ever happened to Tzippy, Moishe, Emile, and Bernard?
-Terry and Bob? It was kinda weird. Didn't really get it.

I never knew the the monsters had names- its cool that they do. Where did the monster names (not movie) originally come from?

Also, due to Ivy's Hat still being wet after I blocked it on Friday (a knitting thing) It'll go out on Monday.

The author named them after family members - aunts and uncles I think. I read it on Wiki once. And actually, I have a few dolls, and they came with names.

I didn't really get the Terry and Bob thing either. In the book version that Dave Eggers put out right before the movie came out, they're just like guard owls for the fort and they don't have names. Also, KW is named Katherine and she is much less "surfer girl". Maybe you'd like the book?

I loved the movie. Cried like a baby. I'm sad you didn't like it more. :(

I really did enjoy it. Only had a few issues, so not bad. I cried at the end too.
